About

Dr. Ibrahim Kutay YILMAZCOBAN (Dr. IKY) completed the Mechanical Engineering department at Sakarya University, Turkey, with a first runner up position and an honorary degree in 2000. After his MSc Thesis about injection molding at Sakarya University, Mechanical Eng. Department, he completed his doctorate study on the behavior, strength, and development of disabled vehicle chassis under collision conditions under the name of “Investigation of Compliance of Disabled Vehicles to Environmental Conditions with Finite Elements Method” at the same department in the year 2009. A long time after the doctorate, he also participated in the lectures, laboratories, and education processes at Arizona State University, USA, to specialize in his field. Then, by combining the existing computer-aided machine design, modeling, finite element modeling capabilities, he improved his studies by forthcoming topics: 1. Vehicle accident, collision, and protection systems, 2. Composite materials and mechanics, 3. Ballistics (outer and terminal (target) ballistics) areas, 4. Armor Technologies, 5. Machine and weapon development, 6. Biomechanics, 7. Experimental and numerical (simulation) studies for modeling, analysis, and production.

In addition to these, within the scope of sustainability, it has been indirectly concerned with wind and wave turbine systems from green energy resources.

Dr. İbrahim Kutay YILMAZÇOBAN (Dr. IKY) studied as a post-doctoral researcher and an adjunct faculty at Arizona State University, under Dr. Subramarinam D. Rajan's supervision on “Development of the Impact Resistance of Composite Protection Bars for Designing an Adaptation System to the Vehicles for Crash Protection by Finite Element Method” between 2014-2015. And he served in a faculty position during his second post-doc about “Vehicle Protection Bar Development against Crash-worthiness via Finite Element Method; Development and Design Study” at the University of California (BERKELEY) under Dr. David Steigmann until March 2016. In July 2014, at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), he made examinations in laboratories existing in his field under the Crashworthiness Laboratory manager (Crash Technologies Laboratory) Prof. Dr. Tomasz Wierzbicki. In the same period, Prof. Dr. Klaus-Jürgen Bathe, who has been managing the MIT Nonlinear FEM Chair for many years, is one of the Finite Element Method's most respected names, consulted with him on his working areas. He has also gained the status of a three-month visitor researcher at HARVARD University to end in October 2014. After making a return to Turkey, he founded the IKY Research Group, which collaborates with the University of California at Berkeley, Arizona State University, The University of Rhode Island, and the Indian Institue of Technology, Delhi.

Dr. Ibrahim Kutay YILMAZCOBAN (Dr. IKY), a corporate partner and R&D manager of Arkadya Engineering company between 2003 and 2014, was assigned to work with 1. Ford Otosan (2003-2008) (indirectly, automobile mold designs for JAGUAR and LANDROVER companies); 2. CAD Modeling of the whole 4-cylinder engine and a part of the 3-cylinder engine by Basak Tractor (2004-2007); 3. Bandsaw CAD modeling for Karmetal (2007, 2008 and 2011); 4. Informatics (PTC solution partner of Turkey) company (2004) Pro-Engineer program Sakarya officer and instructor; 5. OZ-MAK Engineering (2008) Structural analysis of vehicle handling and transport for TOYOTA TURKEY construction of the factory; 6. Cold welding machine design and modeling for Balkaya Precision Machine (2007 and 2008); 7. Wagon carrier structural analysis to Şolpan Makine (2008); 8. Pool type damper and chassis profiles wall thickness optimization and structural analysis to Ozunlu Damper company (2010); 9. TUVASAS (Turkey Wagon Industry) to (2002, 2003) has performed Wagon parts modeling.

Dr. İbrahim Kutay YILMAZÇOBAN (Dr. IKY) has worked as a researcher at TUBITAK (THE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF TURKEY)-MAM (MARMARA RESEARCH CENTER)-BTAE (IT TECHNOLOGIES) (2003-2005) during his academic life. For HYUNDAI TURKEY company (2009), the structural analysis of the bumpers of HYUNDAI Matrix; Seat mold designs and CAM programming for YAZAR Seat Company (2002); He completed Sakarya Sugar Factory Chimney Elevation Structural Analysis tasks for AKIN Industry and Environmental Technologies (2011). Today, primarily based on defense industry Technologies, there are cooperations with institutions that continue as Roketsan, Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation, Otokar and Turkish Armed Forces, etc.

Dr. İbrahim Kutay YILMAZÇOBAN (Dr. IKY) worked as a researcher responsible for ballistic simulations in the international project realized at Arizona State University with the title of “Dept of Penetration test and simulations about the composite (Aluminum, ceramic and Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene) armors against armor-piercing bullets” between 2014-2015. He worked as the Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Coordinator of Sakarya University - TUBITAK MAM - ARMERKOM (Research Center Command) in the GENESIS (Ship Integrated Warfare Management Systems) package within the scope of the MILGEM (National Ship), SHM (Warfare Operations Center) Mechanical Modeling and Design for Frigates, Manufacturing Modeling and Process Project with a budget of around 100 million TL Between 2003-2005. Starting from 2010 to 2012, he worked as a responsible researcher for the design and manufacturing package in the TUBITAK 1001 project entitled "Metallic tube cross-section high-strength lightweight composite beam design, analysis, and production". In 2011-2012, he was the manager of the design, simulation, and optimization processes in the Trailer Bracket Optimizations, Structural Analysis, and New National Bracket Designs Project for TIRSAN Trailer company. He worked as the idea-project planner and also the consultant in the TUBITAK projects titled 1. "Development of Air Gun with Vacuum and Pressure Effect with Bullet Material and Shape Optimizations” at 2018. However, Dr. IKY, who has worked as an executive and researcher in various Sakarya University Scientific projects, is also a reviewer in national and international scientific journals. He also performs reviewing duties within the supervision of R&D centers for the Ministry of Science, Industry, and Technology and TUBITAK.

He is an editorial board member of the international refereed journal “Finite Element Analysis and Application”. Dr. Yilmazcoban has participated in many organizations and has an achievement award from Arizona State University. Dr. IKY has been assigned to study and work for more than two years in the USA TÜBİTAK-2219 program-overseas post-doctoral research fellowship with his work titled “Developing Crash Strength in Composite Protection Rods by Designing Adaptation System for Vehicle Crash Protection” with the help of Finite Elements Method.

Dr. IKY is a Full Member of “University of California BERKELEY, HONOR SOCIETY” and Associate Member (UAMAE) of “The Institute of Research Engineers and Doctors-USA (IRED)”. Dr. Yilmazçoban has many academic studies and two international book chapters 1. co-author author in the 12th Chapter (Design, manufacture, and analysis of ceramic-composite armor) in the book “Lightweight Ballistic Composites, 2nd Edition”, which was published in 2016 by Woodhead Publishing. 2. single-author section in Chapter 4 (The Reliability of Autonomous Vehicles Under Collisions) in the book "AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES" published by Intech in 2016.
